The museum of the Banpo Site is one of a prehistoric matriarchal society belonging to the Yangshao culture of the Yellow River Valley, which dates back 5600 to 6700 years. The site was discovered in the spring of 1953. After five excavations, forty-five sites of houses, two-fenced-in places, more than 200 cellars, 6 pottery kilns, 250 tombs of various types, as well as some 10000 pieces of tools of production were uncovered. In 1962, the State Council declared Banpo site a key cultural institution under State protection.
