Hunan, refered to as “Xiang”, is located south of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. In Chinese, “hu” means “lake” and “nan” “south”, so the province gets its name from being south of the Dongting Lake, China’s second largest freshwater lake. In ancient times, the area drained by the Xiangjiang River teemed with lotus, so Hunan has the reputation of being a “Lotus State”.
Hunan is a cradle of celebrities. In addition to those distinguished in ancient times, it is where major figures of the founding of the PRC were born and brought up, including Mao Zedong, Zhu De, and Liu Shaoqi, which is more than enough to attract world’s attention. Trips organized to visit their hometown are the first choice for many.
