Ningxia is located in the hinterland in northwest China. It has a temperate continental climate and distinctive four seasons a year. The period from April to October is the best season for touring Ningxia.

Ningxia is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. The ancient Silk Road winds its way through the region. Ningxia has beautiful mountains and rivers and is rich in tourist resources including the magnificent Western Xia Tombs, the scenic Liupan Mountain, and Shapotou Desert-Controlling Project Tourist Zone which has been listed on the 500 best projects of the global ecology by the United Nations. For quite a long period of time, Ningxia has developed tourist resources of cultural interest with Western Xia, Fortress and Islamic cultures as the center and attracted more flocks of tourists at home and abroad.

Yinchuan

Yinchuan, also called Phoenix City, is the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.An ancient and well-known city in the west, it was once the capital of the Western Xia Dynasty.Today, Yinchuan is listed as one of the 100 famous historical and cultural cities.

There are many historical and cultural sites in Yinchuan. As it is the center of the Hui culture, Hui customs prevail. The city also features a variety of unique Islamic architectures. Yinchuan welcomes tourists from all over the world to enjoy the beauty of its deserts, historical sites and local customs, with its excellent transport and service facilities.

The Helan Mountain

Helan Mountain is in northwestern Yinchuan. The word Helan in Mongolian means fine horses. Helan Mouna in is over 2,000 meters above sea level with the highest peak being 3,556 meters high. It is an ideal summer resort for tourists.

Xumi Mountain Grottoes

Located at the eastern foot of Xumi Mountain, the grottoes were constructed for many dynasties starting from Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589). There are 20 grottoes well-preserved, winding through about 2 kilometers. Here is an important existing grotto art under the state protection.

Transport: Take a bus at Guyuan and go Yangming Township or Hongyang Township in Haiyuan County, and get off at Xumi Mountain; or take a Guyuan-Sanying Town bus, get off at the entrance of Xumi Mountain, and go to Xumi Mountain by taxi.

The Western Xia Tombs

The Western Xia Tombs are located at the eastern foot of the He lan Mountain, 30 kilometers west of Yinchuan. The tombs extend 10 kilometers from north to south and 4 kilometers from east to west. There are nine tombs of kings and over 20 funerary tombs which were built to fit in with the topography.Although the kings’ tombs were robbed before the Ming Dynasty, still many cultural vestiges remain.

Transport: Take No. “You 1” bus at the Xinyue Plaza, Xingqing District, Yinchuan City at 09:00 or 14:00 in the busy season to the mausoleum; or take No.18 or 105 bus, or No.2 minibus to go to Xinshi District, and then go to the mausoleum by taxi.

One Hundred and Eight Pagodas

One Hundred and Eight Pagodas are located on the sheer slopes of Xiakou Mountain on the west bank of the Yellow River, Qingtongxia City. The pagodas are arranged in an odd order: 12 rows from top to bottom in accordance with the topography and form a huge equilateral triangle with 108 pagodas in all. Written articles unearthed from the foundations of the pagodas show they were built in the Western Xia period .

Transport: Take a taxi from Qingtongxia Town in Qingtongxia City to go to the tourist attractions.

Aviation

The Yinchuan Hedong Airport is situated In the east of the city proper. Shuttle buses go from the Civil Aviation Building to the airport regularly, or tourists may go to the airport by taxi. Forty scheduled flights go from the Yinchuan Hedong Airport to more than 10 large and medium-sized cities in China every week, such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an, Kunming and Chongqing, forming the air routes that take Yinchuan as the center, and radiate to Urumqi in the west, Shenyang in the east, and Kunming and Guangzhou in the south.

Railways

The Baotou-Lanzhou Railway goes through Ningxia, and runs from south to north of the new city proper of Yinchuan. It starts from Baotou in the east. an important city in North China, and connects with the Beijing-Baotou Railway; and ends in Lanzhou, an ancient city in Northwest China in the west, and links with the Lanzhou-Xinjiang, Lanzhou-Qinghai and Lianyungang-Lanzhou railways. Passengers can go from Yinchuan to several dozen cities in China by train, such as Beijing, Lanzhou, Hohhot Baotou, Datong, Zhangjiakou and Qingtongxia.

Qinghai in the northeastern part of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau got its name from Qinghai Lake, the largest inland lake in China. Qinghai Province has a continental highland climate which has a low temperature and a big difference in the temperature. Also it has more sunshine and less rainfall. August and September are the best seasons to visit the beautiful province.

The Yangtze, the Yellow and Lancang rivers all have their origins there so Qinghai is also known as the birthplace of rivers. Qinghai is over 3,000 meters above sea level. It is rich in tourist resources and possesses an ideal ecological environment. The blue sky, vast expanses, white snow-capped mountains, clean and pure lake waters give visitors a feeling of mystery and remoteness. The people of the region have a unique religious culture and folk customs which also make Qinghai a fascinating destination of the tourists from all over the world.

In the remote past, there was a branch line of the ancient Silk Road which stretched from Lanzhou in Gansu westward to Qinghai Province, through Xining, Golmud, then northward to Dunhuang, finally converging with the main road. Along the Silk Road in Qinghai main scenic spots include Qinghai Lake, Birds Island, the Salt Lake and the famous Kumbum Monastery.

Xining

Located on the northeastern part of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xining is the capital of Qinghai Province. It is the hub of Lanzhou-Qinghai and Qinghai-Tibet Railways, and sits astride the main route to the hinterland of Qinghai and Tibet. Xining is 2,275 meters above sea level and is a typical example of a plateau city.

Kumbum Monastery

Located at the southwestern corner of the Lusha’er Town in Huangzhong County, Kumbum Monastery was first built in 1560, or the 39th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. It is one of the six temples of Gelugpa Sect of Tibet-an Buddhism, and the birthplace of Tsongkapa, the founder of Gelugpa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism . It is a Buddhist mon­astery combining Tibetan and Han architectural styles, and was built to suit the topography and sits perfectly on the slopes of the mountain . Four Great Prayer Festivals are held every year. At the Great Prayer Festival held on the 14th-15th days of the first and fourth lunar months, on the seventh-eignth days of the sixth lunar month and on the 22nd-23rd days of the ninth lunar month there are beautiful religious legends, mysterious stories and the three spectaculars of Kumbum Monastery-butter sculptures, mural  paintings and embroidery which attract thousands of tourists.

Transport : The Xining Ximen Bus Tenninal sends mini buses and jeeps to Huangzhong Town, which is close to the Kumbum Monastery, with an interval of 30 minutes between two buses.

Qinghai Lake

Qinghai Lake is 3,196 meters above sea level and has an area of 4,200 square kilometers. It is saline with a 0.6 percent salt content, the largest inland salty water lake in China. Birds Island, Haixin (Sea Heart) Hill and Sand lsland in the lake attract visitors to come.

Transport: It can be reached by the long-distance bus at the Xining Long-Distance Bus Station to Hemahe, 50 kilometers away from the Birds Island, and then by minibus. It takes three hours.

Festivals and Entertainment

Qinghai Hua'er Festival

Time: July 3-9 every year (eighth day of the fourth lunar month, sixth of the sixth lunar month, and 15th day of the seventh lunar month)

Venue: Xining City, Datong County, Ledu County, Tong­ren County in Huangnan Prefecture and Huzhu County in Qinghai Province.

Origins : “Huar” is a kind of folk song popular in Qinghai. The songs are mainly love songs and are a combination of the singing styles of the Hui, Dongxiang, and Bao’an ethnic groups.

What’s on: Singers and audiences gather at Lianhua Mountain and Laoye Mountain in Datong to sing “Huar ” songs. In addition to folkfairs and commodity fairs, various activities are held during the festival, such as blocking the ways, walking around the mountain, singing in antiphonal style, presenting wines, and bidding farewell.
