Introduction to Fujian
Fujian Province, with a warm and humid semi-tropical maritime climate, is situated along China’s southeastern coast. It is separated from Taiwan only by the narrow Taiwan Straits. With more than 3,300-meter coastlines, the province occupies a total land area of 121, 400 square kilometers and 136,300 square kilometers of sea area, one of the major windows and bases for China’s foreign communication. With a population of 35 million, Fujian is also the major hometown of overseas Chinese in China. Over the world, there are more than ten million overseas Chinese of Fujian origin.
With plenty of renowned mountains, peaks, Fujian boasts a rich resource of green plants and biotic diversities. With an excellent ecological environment, forest coverage of the province reaches 62 percent, topping the first in China. Surimi wrapper is made of lean pork on pig’s hind legs. The flesh has been pulverized to a paste with a wooden cane and is added with potato powder and some water before made into dumpling wrappers. Xiamen Stir-Fried Vermicelli
Fry vermicelli in oil until its color changes to reddish yellow, then put it in a plate and add boiling water to get rid of the grease. After that, stir-fry sliced lean pork, winter bamboo shoots, and mushroom and then serve with the vermicelli. Eat with satay sauce and chilli sauce.

Major airports in Fujian are Fuzhou Changle International Airport, Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, and civil airports in Jinjiang and Wuyi Mountain areas. Two major railways of Yingtan — Xiamen and Laizhou — Fuzhou in the province have realized electrization renovation. Major sub-railways are Zhangzhou — Quanzhou — Xiaocuo, Hengfeng — Nanping, Zhangzhou — Longyan — Kanshi and major railway passenger transportation stations are in Fuzhou and Xiamen. At present, there are altogether 40,000 kilometers of highway in the province. There are five national highways, among which two are truck lines. One is from Tongjiang to Sanya, and the other is from Beijing to Fuzhou. Having enjoyed a convenient sea transportation from ancient times, there are now more than 50 clocks and berths in various sea ports in Fujian and they have been open to navigation to more than 60 ports in Shanghai, Hong Kong and other parts of the world. Tourist Attractions in Southern Fujian
First founded in 1960, the arboretum occupies an area of 2.27 million square meters and is the only arboretum in Fujian. After more than four decades of development, the arboretum have imported and planted about 5,300 varieties of semi-tropical and tropical plants. Coniferous tree garden and more than ten such specialized sections as cacti and succulent plant section, bamboo paves, and palm island have been preliminarily established.
Gulangyu Island Scenic Spot
With a total area of 1.91 square kilometers, Gulangyu Island is the largest satellite island of Xiamen. With lofty and steep rocks on the island, there are plenty of dells, sand beaches, reefs, barrancas, and peaks on the island. Known as Musician’s Cradle, A Island of Piano, and Museum for Constructions, quite a lot of European-continental style structures exist on the island. Chen Jiageng Memorial
A national Grade-4 tourist attraction, Chen Jiageng Memorial occupies a total area of 66,500 square meters with 8,000 square meters its constructed area. It is comprised of such scenic spots as Former Residence of Chen Jiageng, Exhibition of Facts of Chen Jiageng, Returning-home Garden, Returning-home Park, Jiageng Park, and Jimei Aoyuan Park. Full of local and Chinese cultural connotations and with distinctive architectural features, this memorial exhibits Chen Jiageng’s patriotism. Now, Chen Jiageng Memorial has become one of the first choices for visitors coming to Xiamen.
Xiamen Haicang Bridge Scenic Spot
A national Grade-4 tourist attraction, this scenic spot is comprised of Haicang Bridge, a world No.3 and Asia No. 1 offshore suspension bridge in terms of scale, and Huoshaoyu Island, also a national Grade-4 scenic spots. A ecological resort suitable for holidays, Huoshaoyu Island is full wild wonders and is divided into two parts: Xiamen Youngster’s Science and Technology Hall, and Huoshaoyu Island Ecological Park.
Quanzhou Qingyuan Mountain Scenic Spot
Only 2.5 kilometers away from Quanzhou downtown, Qingyuan Mountain scenic spot is a national key scenic spot. Comprised of such three parts as Qingyuan Mountain, Sacred Mountain & Holy Tombs, and Nine Suns Mountain, this scenic spot occupies a total area of 62 square kilometers. Famous for its springs, rocks, caves and peaks, Qingyuan Mountain preserved quite a lot of cultural relics and ancient sites. There are statues of Buddhism and Taoist from Song and Yuan Dynasties scatted and nearly 500 stone carvings from various dynasties. There are such major historical and cultural sites as Laojun Rock, a Song-Dynasty (960-1279) statue representing Chinese ancient philosopher Laozi, holy Islamic tombs of the Tang Dynasties,and Praying for Wind and Rain Stone Carvings from Song Dynasty.
Qingjing Mosque, also known as Al-Sahabah Mosque, on Tumen Street in downtown Quanzhou City was first built in 1009 of the Northern Song Dynasty(960—1127). With a typical Arabic Islam architectural style, it is one of the oldest mosques in China and now is a major historical and cultural site under state protection.
History of Quanzhou Overseas Communication Exhibitons
The exhibitions are comprised of Exhibition Hall for the Ancient Shipwreck Excavated from Quanzhou Bay in Kaiyuan Monastery, and such three exhibits as Exhibit of Quanzhou Religious Stone Inscriptions, Exhibit of Quanzhou’s Ancient Overseas Communications, and Exhibit of Chinese Ancient Ship Models in Museum for Overseas Communications History situated in Donghu Street.
Zhangzhou Binhai Volcano National Geologic Park
Located at around the Zhangpu County and Longhai City of Zhangzhou, the total area of park is about 100 square kilometers,Zhangzhou Binhai Volcano National Geologic Park is a typical constitution with Tertiary Period Volcano geological features. The basalt in the volcano eruption 17 million years ago formed the typical volcano physiognomy view. It is also a amazing and interesting place for science popularization.
Ancient Chongwu Castle
Located at the east of Chongwu Peninsula, Hui’an County of Quanzhou, Chongwu castle is bounded on three sides by the sea, and adjoins land on one side. From ancient times, the castle has been an important coast defense garrison, a major place for fishery and shipping industries. Known as the City of Stone Carvings, Chongwu boasts beaches and cliff debris, historical cultural relics, and amazing sea scenes. Major scenic spots there are Chongwu Ancient City, Museum of Stone Carvings, Half Moon Bay, and Folk Village of Hui’an Women. Built in 1387 and with altogether five guard posts and screen walls, the magnificent wall of the castle is 2,567 meters long, 7 meters high, with a 5-meter-wide base. A well-preserved stone-constructed coast defense castle, Chongwu is now a major historical and cultural site under state protection.
Dongshan Wind Rock
Located at the Tongling Town of Dongshan County, Dongshan Wind Rock is a national grade-4A tourist attraction and provincial-level scenic spots. Regarded as “No.1 rock in the world”, the round rock stands towards the sea with 4.37 meters in height, 4.57 meters in width, 4.69 meters in length and about 200 tons in weight. Contacted area of the peach-shaped rock and the flat ground is no more than one meter. Because of its unique features, the rocked was recorded in the China’s Best Geography.
Also called the Bridge of Security, Luoyang Bridge is situated at sea outfall of the Luoyang River to northeast of Quanzhou City. Building of the bridge began in 1053 and the construction was not completed until five years later. Now with 834 meters in length, seven meters in width, there are 28 delicately carved stone lions, four warrior guards, and 500 handrails on both sides of the bridge, and seven pavilions and nine pagodas dotted around the construction. The first sea port stone bridge in China and now a major historical and cultural site under state protection, the foundation of the piers was ingeniously designed. It has a raft-style foundation reinforced by raising oysters on the surface, a pioneering work in the annals of world bridge construction. Thus, together with Lugou Bridge, Zhaozhou Bridge, Guangji Bridge, the four were deemed as the Four Most Renowned Bridges of China.
Tianfu Tea Museum
Located at Zhangpu County, the Tianfu Tea Museum is a national Grade 4A tourist attraction, covering an area of 53,360 square meters. Now the biggest tea museum globe, the museum is comprised of four major exhibition parts: the main exhibition hall, teaching rooms o ceremony, the exhibition hall of Japanese tea ceremony, and the painting and calligraphy hall. A professional museum combining the function of academic research, education, entertainment, and culture-spreading, there are also eight major sight-seeing spots.
Tourist Attractions in Eastern Fujian
Located in the Fading City on the border of Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces, Taimu Mountain is a state-level tourist attraction and a national geologic park. With granite hoodoos caves as its main feature, the mountain combines natural beauty and man-made wonders. Sight-seeing area of this mountain is up to 92.02 square kilometers and area under protection is up to 200 square kilometers. There are four major scenic spots such as Taimu Ridges, Nine Carps Stream, Fuyao Islets, and Qingchuan Shore, and such three independent spots as the Villages of the She Ethnic Group, Ancient Castle of the Lengcheng Village, and Ancient Folk Residence in Green Suburb.
Mandarin Duck Stream and White Water Lake
Located at the middle of the Jiufeng Peak Ridge and a state-level tourist attraction, the whole scenic spot is in the shape of crescent. With a total area of 66 square kilometers the scenic spot is comprised of White Water Lake, Yiyang Lake, Mandarin Duck Stream, Lord Liu Rock, and Taibao Building. With a well-preserved ecological environment, the scenic spot is covered with green trees and beautiful waterfalls. White Water Lake, with a total area of 80,000 square meters, is the biggest shallow water square in the world.
Tourist Attractions in Western Fujian
Yongding Earth Buildings Folk Village
The unique residential houses of Hakkas, Yongding Earth Buildings Folk Village tops the world in terms of its time-honored history, varieties, amount, scale, exquisite design and complete functions. According to research, there are more than 30 varieties up to more than 23,000 earth buildings such as round earth buildings, square earth buildings, pentacle earth building, octagon earth buildings, cap-shaped earth buildings, and pile-dwellings at this place. Among them, Zhencheng Building, known as “earth building princess”, and Chengqi Building, known as “earth building King” are most typical.
Located in the Liancheng County of Fujian, Guanzhi Mountain is only 1.5 kilometers away from the county seat. A national Grade-4A tourist attraction and national key scenic spot, Guanzhi Mountain boasts magnificent hills, rare stones, beautiful water, and serene caves, thus it is called “A Enlarged Mindscape and A Miniature of Heaven.”
Situated in Yanshi Town, Longyan Xinluo District in southern Wuyi Mountain range, Dragon Cave is 48 kilometers away from the urban areas and belongs to karst physiognomy. A national grade-4A scenic spot, according to research, the super-size cave was formed 300 million years ago. At present, the already-known area of this cave is up to more than 50,000 square meters. With three layers from up to bottom and various amazing stalactites in different sizes, there are altogether two galleries, eight halls, 16 sub-caves, 64 scenic spots, and 3,000-meter-long scenic strip in the cave.
Plum Blossom Mountain China Tiger Park
A state-level nature protection zone, Plum Blossom Mountain is situated in Shanghang County, Longyan City. With a total area of more than 220 square kilometers, the mountain boasts a variety of plants and animals, among which there are more than 60 rare plants and more than 40 precious animals, thus it is known as “Green Emerald on the Tropic of Cancer” and “Home of South China Tiger.” To save the South China Tigers (also called Amoy Tiger or Chinese Tiger) that are going to die out, Longyan City constructed China Tiger Park which combines the functions of scientific researching, breeding and re-wild training of the tigers together. With a total area of 4.669 square kilometers, South China tigers here have multiplied to 20.
Tourist Attractions in Northern Fujian
Situated at southern Wuyishan City, Fujian, at the southeast foot of north Wuyi Mountain range, Wuyi Mountain was listed in the first group of National Key Scenic Spots and inscribed into the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1999. Shaped as a strip and with a total area of 70 square kilometers, the width from east to west is about 5 kilometers and the length from south to north is about 14 kilometers. Belonging to Danxia physiognomy, Wuyi Mountain forms its unique geographic features because of crustal movement in the history and is known as “three by three,” “six by six,” “seventy-two” and “ninety-nine.” “Three by three” refers to the jade-like nine twist stream circling around the mountain. “Six by six” refers to the thirty six gorgeous peaks. “Seventy-two” and “ninety-nine” refer to 72 caves and 99 cliffs, respectively. With green water and red hills, Wuyi Mountain is famed as “Most Beautiful Under Heaven.
Nine Twist Stream
Originated from Wuyi Mountain range, Nine Twist Stream crosses the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Spot, with nine curves, hence its name. With the total length up to 9.5 kilometers, the stream occupies an area of 8.5 square kilometers. With mountains surrounded, the stream is full of lyric flavor. Major scenic spots are: Dawang Peak, Jade Maiden Peak, Immortal Visiting Rock, Imperial Tea Garden, Cloud Caves, Wuyi Studying House, Touring Heaven Peak, and Drying Cloth Rock. Visiting Nine Twist Stream by bamboo raft is especially a pleasure.
Touring Heaven Peak
North to the Six Twist Stream, Touring Heaven Peak is located in the center of the scenic zone.408.8 meters above the sea level, relative height of the peak is 215 meters. The grotesque and steep peak overlooks the mountains around. Every time after rain, when first sun ray emerges, white clouds are all over the mountain. Tourists would feel like being in roaring waves on the sea when wind is blowing and the clouds are swaying. Standing on the viewing platform to see clouds, tourists would feel like being in the fairyland and are visiting the heaven palace, hence the name Touring Heaven Peak.
Dahongpao (Big Red Robe) Tea Trees
Highest quality among teas from Wuyi Mountain Dahongpao tea trees grows in Jiulong Canyon, in northern Wuyi Mountain. Since at present, there are very a few preserved, the tea is very rare and precious. With clear springs in the canyon, Dahongpao tea grows at the place more than 600 meters above sea level. Since the soil there is effloresced from acid rocks, it is suitable for the growth of tea. With dense branches, these tea trees boast shining green leaves and the new sprouts are in purplish red. Every year, at the time when the tea trees are sprouting, people seeing faraway would find that these tea trees are all in crimson, as if wearing red robes.
Wuyi Mountain Nature Protection Zone
A national key nature protection zone, member of Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO, and one of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Wuyi Mountain nature protection zone is located at the border of Wuyi Mountain, Jianyang City and Guangze County, with a total area of 570 square kilometers. There are altogether 377 mountains of more than 1,000 meters above the sea level, 112 mountains of more than 1,500 meters above the sea level, seven mountains of more than 2,000 meters above the sea level in this zone. Huanggang Mountain, the highest peak in Wuyi Mountain range, is 2,158 meters above the sea level. Steep mountains and dense forests in this zone not only block invades of cold snaps from Northwest, but also keep the warm air flow from the ocean, making the zone full of clouds, mists, and rainfalls, a typical medium subtropical climate. With a warm yet humid weather, forest coverage in this zone reaches 92 percent, with mainly such seven categories as needle broad-leaved mixed forest, broad-leaved evergreen forest, needle broad-leaved bamboo mixed forest and bamboo forest.
The varieties of bamboos in this zone take up about one third of China’s total amount. There are altogether 3,000 to 4,000 varieties of plants, with more than 50 rare species such as gingko, China Tuliptree, Tsuga Chinensis, yew, Ford Woodlotus, Chinese torreya, glyptostrobus pensilis, Magnoliaii sieboldii, hence it is known as a natural arboretum.
There are more than 400 wild animals, among which there are nearly 100 vertebrates and there are such state-level protected animals as South China Tiger, macaque, clouded leopard golden cat, civet cat, white-necked long-tailed pheasant, yellow-bellied tragopan, pangolin serow, and Chongan Vibrissaphore. Migratory birds like to rest in places near Guadun Villaqe, one nf places having the richest bird resource in the world. With more than 300 varieties of birds, Guadun is known as The Paradise of Birds. Dazhulan, example area of world biotic mode, is also called The Paradise of Insects, Of all the 32 insect orders in 1000 families in China, more than 5,000 varieties in 31 orders in more than 300 families have been found there. 64 varieties of snakes found there are in five orders of 26 families of which 17 varieties are poisonous. There are more than 500,000-Hundred-pace Snakes, a unique kind of Chinese snake, hence ti is called “Kingdom of Snakes”.
Boat Coffins and Rainbow Planks
In the Dazang Peak, Xiaozang Peak, Cloud Cliff, Dawang Peak and Goddess of Mercy Peak, there are quite a few boat-shaped coffin sandwiched in the crevices of cliffs high up above the ground. These coffins are said to be the relics of the Yue ethnic group residing in Wuyi Mountain in ancient times. Rainbow Board, a kind of board used to support the boat-shaped coffins or to erect wooden roadways along perpendicular rock-faces. How did people put the coffins into such places 3,000 years ago remains a mystery today.
Stone Carvings Modeling of Famous Calligraphy on Cliffs on Wuyi Mountain
In Wuyi Mountain, there are more than 400 stone carvings modeling of famous calligraphy on cliffs discovered, most of which were works from Song, Ming, and Qing Dynasties and characters in various styles of calligraphy. To name just a few, there are the original writing of Zhu Xi, a renowned rationalistic Confucian scholar in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) on the rocks of Nine Twist Stream and a 1,800-character Streams of Wuyi Mountain written by Lord Xiong Ming during the reign of Emperor Wang Li (1573-1620) of the Ming Dynasty.
Imperial Tea Garden
Imperial Tea Garden is situated to the south of Nine Twist Stream. Wuyi Mountain boasts a long history of tea producing. When the imperial tea garden was first founded more than 250 years old, it was in fashion for quite a period. With two officials taking charge of the daily work in the garden, it turned an annual 360 jin of high-quality tea to the imperial court. Later for some reason, the garden was deserted. Now the garden has been renovated and reappears its glamour. The architectural composition of the garden is neatly designed.
The Ancient Chengcun City of the Han Dynasty
Located one kilometer southwest of Xingtian Town, Wuyi Mountain City, on a upland hill is the ancient city site of the Han Dynasty, with a total area of nearly 480,000 square meters. A historical and cultural site under state protection, the city is at the foot of mountains and beside rivers. The remnants of the city wall range from four to eight meters, and three openings there in the East and West city wall are city gates in ancient times. The city was surrounded by moats. Through excavation, halls, buildings, tombs, residences, palaces, iron wares and potteries were found. From the more than 40,000 cultural relics unearthed, which possess a strong Han Dynasty style, people can tell as early as 2,000 years ago, Fujian people already had reached hiqh-levels of smelting, casting, and pottery-making.
Zhaixia Stone Quarry
Situated at the Jixi Village, juncture of Shancheng Town and Dalian Viallge,16 kilometers away from the county seat, Zhaixia Stone Quarry is also called Golden Dragon Quarry by locals and possesses a dominant position in Taining World Geological Park. With a total area of about 2 square kilometers, the stone quarry is like a giant crouching dragon. On the geologic rift zone from Shaowu, Fujian to Heyuan, Guangdong, the stone quarry is formed under the background of rift-depression basins elating back to 65 million years ago. The Danxia topography and the favorable ecological environment there are combined in a harmonious way and make visitors feel free from the turmoil of the world.
Situated at the Taining County south of Wuyi Mountain, Golden Lake is a state-level key scenic spot and a national Grade-4A tourist attraction. Being the largest man-made lake in Fujian, the lake has a total area of is about 33.4 square kilometers, with 60 kilometers in depth and water storage capacity up to 870 million cubic meters. With beautiful waters, islands, mountains, caves around, visitors can also enjoy well-kept residential buildings, streets, alleys, temples besides the lake. There are more than 180 places of interests such as Tiger Head Rock, Ganlu Temple, and Red Cliff in the area.
Peach Blossoms Cave
About eight kilometers away from downtown of Yong’an City locates the Peach Blossom Cave, a key national tourist attraction and a national grade-4A scenic spot. Because the streams here are surrounded with peach trees, hence its name. Of the sight-seeing spots here, A Gleam of Sky is most interesting, a narrow space between two peaks with heights about 30 to 40 meters. People have to squeeze through, for the whole length of the space is 120 meters.
Located in Dahu Village, 13 kilometers northwest of Yong’an, the rock forest occupies an area of 1.21 square kilometers. There are also such five nearby scenic spots as Cuiyun Cave, Shouchun Rock, Hongyun Cave, Eighteen Cave, and Rock Cave Spring. With altogether 196 stelae in various shapes there, the highest one is 36 meters. According to research, this rock forest used to be seabed 50 million years ago. Due to crustal movement, it became stone forest.
Situated at the foot of Tianjie Mountain, seven kilometers south of J Jiangle County, Yuhua Cave is a state-level tourist attraction. With a total length of 10 kilometers, the main cave is 2.5 kilometers long. With glabrous and jade-like stones, it is the largest and longest limestone cave in China and is regarded as the “First Cave in the Fujian Mountains” arid one of the Tour Most Renowned Caves in China.” There are two tunnels, six branch caves and more than 160 scenic spots in the cave. With three springs named as Stone Spring, Well Spring, and Clever Spring respectively, there are many stone carvings modeling of famous calligraphy from the Song Dynasty (960-1279) on cave entrances and rock cliffs in the cave.
Tourist Attractions in Central Fujian
Haitan Scenic Spot
A state-level scenic spot, Haitan Scenic Spot is located at the Pingtan County, Fujian, near Taiwan Strait. Affected by the island climate and influenced by waves and rain, landforms there are typically those being washed and eroded by sea water. With white sea beach, it is a wonderful place for tourists. With a total area of 71 square kilometers, the scenic spot is comprised of two bays and six parts such as Tannan Bay, Shanqi Bay, Panyang Stone Sail, Haitan God, East Sea Fairyland, Junshan Mountain, Nanzhai Mountain and Jiangjun Mountain.
Mawei Luoxing Towers Park
21 kilometers away from Fuzhou City situates the Luoxing Park, a park taking ships and boats as its main theme. Luoxing towers in this park were included in the naval map of Zheng He, a great navigator of the Ming Dynasty and were the first navigation towers recognized by the international community in ancient China.
National Tourist Resort of Meizhou Island
Meizhou Island is situated 42 kilometers away from the Southeast of Putian City, only 133. 2 kilometers away from Taizhong Port of Taiwan. Covering an area of 14.35 square kilometers and with a population of 38,000, Meizhou Island is home of the Goddess Mazuofthe Sea and birthplace of Mazu Culture. There are more than 30 scenic spots such as Mazu Temple, Jiubaolan Golden Beach and E’ wei Magic Stone Park. It is a national tourist resort and a national grade 4-A tourist attraction.
About 40 kilometers away from the downtown Putian, in the Gangli Village of Shanting Town, south of Puxi Byland to the north of Meizhou Bay is the birth place of Mazu. It is said that Mazu was a girl originally named Lin Mo. First built in Song Dynasty and originally was the ancestral hall of the Lin Family, it became one of the earliest Mazu temples after Mazu was worshipped and offered sacrifices.
