Brief Introduction

Guangdong lies in the southern tip of the mainland of China, with Nanling Mountain behind, the South China Sea in front, and borders Hong Kong and Macao. It is a famous native place of overseas Chinese. Most parts of Guangdong have a subtropical, marine and monsoon climate. All plants are green year round. With a beautiful landscape, the province is suitable for tours year round.

Guangdong has a favorable geographical position and a long history It has rich tourist resources with the customs and features of the area in the south of Five Ridges (covering Guangdong and Guangxi). The main tourists areas include the four famous mountains: the Danxia Mountain (a world natural heritage), Xiqiao Mountain next to the South China Sea, Luofu Mountain in Boluo and Dinghu Mountain in Zhaoqing, the Seven-Star Rock surrounded by mountains and waters, Yingxi Peaks and the North Guangdong Grand Canyon. In addition, the Pearl River Delta, waterside villages in Chaozhou-Shantou Delta, extensive coastline, numerous islands, quantities of golf courses and various kinds of hot springs are all attractive to tourists.

A world cultural heritage block houses and villages in Kaiping, Liangyuan Garden in Foshan, Keyuan Garden in Dongguan, Qinghui Garden in Shunde and Yuyin Mountain Houses in Panyu are reputable historical sites in Guangdong. Guangzhou, Chaozhou, Foshan, Meizhou, Zhaoqing and Haikang are six national historical and cultural cities and are famous for their own unique historical and cultural sites.

Recently Guangdong has developed new scenic areas such as Chimelong Iburist and Holiday Resort in Guangzhou, the Overseas Chinese City in east Shenzhen, Ligong International Iburist and Holiday Resort in Shaoguan, Jinghuayuan Tourism Area in Heyuan, Qingxin Hot Spring Holiday Resort in Qingyuan, New Yiianmingyuan Garden and International Racecourse in Zhuhai make tourists forget to return. 

In addition, Guangdong is well known for its delicious food and snacks. Guangzhou

Guangzhou, or Sui in an abbreviated form, is the capital of Guangdong Province. It lies on the northern edge of the rich Pearl River Delta and borders the South China Sea and Hong Kong and Macao. Guangzhou is a national historical and cultural city and an excellent tourist city of China. As it has a temperate and humid climate, it has flowers in four seasons and is famous as a “city of flowers”. Also it has a long history and developed economy. It combines the Chinese and Western cultures and boasts many historical sites. The city is rich in tourist resources including mainly the Guangxiao Temple, Tomb of the King of the Nanyue State, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Chimelong Tourist Holiday Resort, Chen Family’s Ancestral Temple, East Guangzhou Railway Station Square, Huanghuagang Seventy-Two Martyrs’ Cemetery, Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain Scenic Area and Lianhua Mountain.

Guangxiao Temple

Guangxiao Temple stands on Guangxiao Road, Guangzhou. It is a largest ancient Buddhist temple with the longest history in the city. A folk saying goes, “Guangxiao Temple existed before the city.” The temple maintains many historical and cultural sites including the Daxiong Hall built during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420), the Thousand- Buddha Iron Pagoda building in the Southern Han Dynasty (917-971), Hall of Sixth Chan Patriarch Huineng and Hall of Reclining Buddha built during the Song and Ming dynasties, and quantities of inscribed tablets and statues of Buddha. All these are valuable Buddhist sites and have high historical and cultural value.

Chen Family's Ancestral Temple

Chen Family’s Ancestral Temple, or Chen Family’s Academy of Classic Learning, is an ancestral temple of the Chen families in Guangdong Province. Standing on Zhongshan Seventh Road, it was built in 1890-1894 or the 16th- 20th years of Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. It sits in the north and faces the south. This temple covers an area of 150,000 square meters, of which 6,400 square meters occupied by the main buildings. It is composed of 19 buildings which are famous for their delicate and elegant decorations, which reflect a folk decoration art in the south of the Five Ridges. The temple is well known for its three carvings, three sculptures and one iron cast.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built from 1928 to 1931 with funds contributed by the people of Guangzhou and overseas Chinese in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866- 1925), a great democratic revolutionary forerunner. Standing at the foot of Yuexiu Hill, it is one of the landmark buildings in Guangzhou. A national AAAA scenic spot, it covers an area of 63,000 square meters including 12,000 square meters of main buildings. The hall is 52 meters high and is the largest of its kind in the world.

Huanghagang Seventy-Two Martyrs' Cemetery

Standing on Xianlie C. Road, this cemetery covers an area of 160,000 square meters and is a key cultural site under the state protection. The cemetery was first built in 1912 to cherish the memory of the 72 revolutionary martyrs who were killed in the 1911 Guangzhou Armed Uprising against the Qing rule staged by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The inscription on the gate – Imperishable Noble Spirit-was written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

Pearl River Tour in the Evening

Dongjiang, Xijiang and Beijiang rivers, the tributaries of the Pearl River, join in the Guangzhou section and constitute a beautiful scene in the evening. With the lights on the both sides, the cruise ship leaves Xidi Wharf with tourists and runs eastward and goes through Jiefang, Haizhu, Haiyin, Guangzhou and Hedong bridges and returns back. Tourists can appreciate eight scenes of the city such as Zhuhai Danxin, Donghu Chunxiao and Etan Yeyue. Also tourists can see South Mansion, Aiqun Mansion, Jiangwan Hotel, Ersha Hai-zhu Square Garden, Shamian Western-style architectures.

Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain Scenic Area

Located in the northern part of Guangzhou, the scenic area consists of more than 30 peaks, covering a mountainous area of 21 square kilometers and its Moxing Peak, the main one, stands 382 meters above sea level. It is a good place to have a bird’s-eye view of the city and the Pearl River. In late spring or in sunny day after rain, the white clouds around the peaks constitute a wonderful scene. This scenic area includes South Lake Amusement Park, Huangpodong Reservoir, Ming- zhulou Reservoir, Dajinzhong Reservoir and Luhu Lake. Also it boasts many historical and cultural sites such as Baiyun (White Cloud) Temple, Shuangxi Temple, Nengren Temple, Maitreya Temple Yunyan Temple and Baihua Tomb.

The Eastern Overseas Chinese Town

This town occupies an area of nine square kilometers and is a national ecological tourism demonstration area with “letting city people back to nature” as the aim and cultural tourism as the feature. Between sea and mountains, this town artfully built three theme areas: the Daxia Valley, Chaxi Valley and Yunhai Valley and integrates dynamic ecology, leisure tourism, outdoor sports and indicates the harmonic coexistence of human and nature.

Window of the World

Shenzhen Window of the World stands on the bank of the beautiful Shenzhen Bay and covers an area of 480,000 square meters. It is a large cultural scenic area with a theme of carrying forward the creams of world cultures. A national AAAA scenic area, it is divided into eight areas: the World Square, Asia Area, Oceania Area, Europe Area, America Area, Africa Area, World Sculpture Park and International Street, covering more than 130 scenic spots in the world.

Splendid China and Folk Cultural Village

Splendid China stands on the bank of Shenzhen Bay and in the Eastern Overseas Chinese Town. It is miniature to vividly reflect China’s history, culture, art, ancient architecture and folk customs in various ways. It is the largest of its kind in the world. The Folk Cultural Village is China’s first cultural scenic area combining folk arts, folk customs and residential buildings.

Xiaomeisha Seashore Tourism Center

Xiaomeisha Seashore Tourism Center is located in the eastern part of Shenzhen and is composed of Xiaomeisha Sea World, Xiaomeisha Hotel and Xiaomeisha Holiday Resort. It is a golden seashore holiday resort combining marine economy, history, culture, scientific popularization on national defense, leisure, shopping and catering.

Shenzhen Sea World

Standing in the Xiaomeisha Seashore Tourist Resort famous as the “Oriential Hawaii” on the golden coastline in the east of Shenzhen, Shenzhen Sea World is the largest park with a theme of marine culture in China. It leads its counterparts in the number of exhibition halls, the richest seabed featured performances and the strongest entertainment participation in the country.

Shenzhen Guanlan Golf Course

Located in Guanlan Town, Shenzhen, Guanlan Golf Course is a top-notch one in the country. It has 12 world-level courses with 216 holes. These courses are built according to the terrains. The harsh sects bring great challenges to the golf lovers. Since 2007 it has held Golf World Cup for consecutive 12 years.

Zhuhai

Situated in the Pearl River estuary, Zhuhai borders Macao and faces Hong Kong across the sea. It is one of China’s five special economic zones. In 1998, Zhuhai received the “International Award for best practices to improve the living environment” by the United Nations Center for Human Settlements and listed as one of the most suitable cities for habitat in the world. In addition it is the only city chosen as one of the top 40 scenic areas of the country. In 2000, the city was entitled a National Ecological Demonstration Zone. The Haiquan (Ocean Spring) Bay in the city is the largest marine hot spring in China. Yuanming New Residential Zone, Imperial Hot Spring Holiday Village, Meixi Archway, Agricultural Science Wonder, Dream Water City, and Pearl Amusement Park have their own features. Hot spring, islands in the sea and golf are three tourist products of Zhuhai.

"Zhuhai Fishing Girl" and Lovers Road

One of the landmarks of Zhuhai, the sculpture “Zhuhai Fishing Girl” stands on the picturesque Xianglu Bay. This stone sculpture is 8.7 meters high and weighs 10 tons. It is composed of 70 pieces of granite stones. It is built according to a beautiful fairy tale. The Lovers Road is 26 kilometers long, like a colorful dancing band. It starts from the Tangjiawan Avenue and winds its way along the Xianglu Bay, winds southward to Zhuhai Port Square to connect with Macao. It is a lovely and pleasure road.

New Yuanmingyuan Garden

At the foot of Dashilin Mountain, the New Yuanmingyuan Garden is one of the first group of national AAAA scenic areas. On a scale of 1 to 1 of the main structures of the burned Yuanmingyuan Garden in Beijing, the New Yuanmingyuan Garden in Zhuhai reappears magnificence and grandeur of the then garden. It is the largest imitated imperial garden in south China.

Meixi Archway - A Large Mansion Gate of Zhuhai

Meixi Archway Tourist Area is located in Meixi Village, Qianshan. It covers an area of 126,000 square meters and is composed of Meixi Archway Square, Former Residence of Chen Fang, the Chen’s Garden and Tourism Service Center. It is a tourist and holiday resort integrating the memory of celebrities, folk museum, sightseeing and leisure, and the protection of cultural relics.

Haiquan (Ocean Spring) Bay Holiday Resort

Lying on Pingsha Town, Jinwan District, Zhuhai, this resort occupies an area of 5.1 square kilometer with rare quality ocean hot spring as its core theme. It is mainly composed of eight parts including two five-star hotels, Fisherman’s Wharf for catering and entertainment, modern Dream Theater, Mysterious Island Theme Park, Sports Club and Outward Training Camp. In 2007, it was awarded as the first “‘National Tourism, Leisure and Holiday Demonstration Base” in China by China National Tourism Administration.

Royal Hot Spring

Situated in the western part of Zhuhai, it is China’s first open air hot spring and has carried forward the hot spring history and culture of more than 700 years since the Song Dynasty(960-1279). It integrates hot spring leisure, star-rate hotel, conference, catering, health care and amusement and is a destination for holiday, tourism, leisure, and business meetings.

Macao Round-the-island Tour

It is one of the most traditional and representative classical tourist programmes of Zhuhai. The pleasure boat departs the Wanzai Port, travelling for one and a half hours. On the way, tourists can appreciate the Bank of China lower in Macao, the Lisboa Le Grand Large Hotel, Catholic Church, Macao government house, the return of Macao Monument and Macao International Airport. Lying in Jinwan District, Zhuhai, for the first phase construction, it has built 27-hole light-flooded golf courses (one with 18 holes and the other nine holes) and 326 villas, covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers with convenient transportation facilities extending in all directions. Shaoguan

Sliaoguan is an excellent tourism city situated in the northern part of Guangdong Province, on the upper reaches of Beijiang River. It has rich materials and beautiful landscape. It is hot in summer and cool in winter. With rich tourist resources, Shaoguan is a tourist center in north Guangdong. It is famous worldwide for the world natural heritage Danxia Mountain and Buddhist holy site Nanhua Chan Temple. In addition, the site of Maba Man, ancient Zhuji Lane, ancient road of Meiguan, Guangdong Canyon, Nanling State Forest Park and Cheba Mountain National Natural Reserve are all worth to visit.

Danxia Mountain

Danxia Mountain, Chinese Red Stone Park, stands in Renhua County and Zhenjiang District, Shaoguan City. It covers an area of 292 square kilometers and is the largest and most beautiful scenic area in Guangdong Province with Danxia landform as its core. It has been listed as world natural heritage, world geopark and a national AAAA scenic area. Also it is a national natural reserve and a national geopark.

Nanhua Chan Temple

Standing in Qujiang District, Shaoguan City, this famous Buddhist temple is a main bodhimandala of the Chan section in China. Also it is one of the four ancient temples in the south of the Five Ridges. A legend says the Sixth Chan founder Huineng imparted knowledge of Buddhist doctrines here for 37 years long, hence this temple is named as “Chan ancestral temple”.

Ancient Road of Meiguan

Standing on the top of Dayu Mountain in northeast Nanxiong City, this ancient road went into operation during the Qin and Han dynasties and was the shortest transport main passage connecting the Yangtze River with the Pearl River system and land routes in ancient times. Today Meiguan Ancient Road has been listed as a cultural site under the provincial protection. It has been a place for men of letters to appreciate plum blossom from various historical periods.

Ancient Zhuji Lane

Situated in Nanxiong City, this ancient lane was the birthplace of residents living in the Pearl River Delta and was the ancestral homes of the ancestors of millions of overseas Chinese. Recently, large groups of descendants of Zhuji Lane have come back to pay their respects to their ancestors. Some 20 meters to the South Gate of the lane stands a solid stone tower from the Yuan Dynasty (1206- 1368), called Hufei Tower, the only extant stone tower from the Yuan Dynasty with its exact time through textual research in Guangdong.

Guangdong Grand Canyon

Located in Dabu Town of Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County, Guangdong Grand Canyon has a flat gentle top. The waterfalls rush down from the more than 200 meters high cliffs and constitute a breathtaking scene. The bottom of the canyon can be reached via 1,386 stone steps along a 50-degree slope. This canyon boasts many crisscrossed ravines, fantastic peaks and towering ancient trees.

Cheba Mountain National Natural Reserve

Standing in southeast part of Shixing County, this natural reserve covers an area of 7,545 hectares. It maintains large-scale primeval forests and is rich in flora and fauna resources, so it is famous as a treasure house of great varieties of animals and plants and a bright pearl in the south mountains. 

Jiangmen

Jiangmen is located in the southwestern part of the Pearl River Delta and is a tourist city in south China famous for green mountains, beautiful waters, charming islands and culture of overseas Chinese hometown. It is rich in tourist resources, not only plenty of landscape garden scenes, but also cultural sights with long history. The most famous and charming ones include the world heritage site Kaiping blockhouses and villages, Chuan-dao Island Tourist and Holiday Resort, Bird Paradise, Jin-shan Hot Spring in Enping, Ancient Battlefield in Yamen, Dayan Mountain and Xinhui Guifeng Mountain Scenic Area.

Kaiping Blockhouses and Villages

Blockhouses spread in rural areas of Kaiping, Guangdong Province. These multi-storied tower-style blockhouses were first built in early Qing Dynasty integrating defense, residences and combination of Chinese and Western architectural arts. Also they show the history of overseas Chinese, social form and traditional culture. Most of them are scattered in Kaiping and extend in length and breadth for dozens of kilometers in large scale, great varieties and unique shapes. In 2007, they have been included into the list of world heritage sites by the UNESCO.

Birds Paradise

In Tianmacun River to the south of Xinhui City, this paradise got its name from the famous work Taradise of Birds” written in 1933 by the great master of literature Ba Jin. It is said that more than 380 years ago, a banyan grew into a “single-wood forest” covering 10,000 square meters with its branches and leaves on a mud mound in the river and the mud mound became a green island. The tree attracts tens of thousands of birds, especially the white and gray egrets are in a great number. White egrets leave in early morning and return in evening while the gray egrets leave in the evening and return in early morning. They circle above the island alternately, making quacking sound and present a magnificent scene.

Chuandao Islands Tourist and Holiday Resort

Standing in southwestern part of Taishan City, this resort is composed of two islands: Shangchuan Island and Xiachuan Island and is one of the famous seashore tourist and holiday resorts in China. It boasts wonderful landscape and abounds in rich tourist resources. It has more than 20 quality sea-bathing grounds including Feisha Beach, Wangfuzhou, Golden Sand Beach and Silver Sand Beach. In addition, this resort has more than 500 hectares of primeval secondary forests with thousands of macaques living there. Also it has more than 60 hectares of rare Podocarpus nagi trees which are known as the diamond of the plant kingdom. In addition it has plenty of ruins such as the cave in which the Qing pirate Zhang Baozai kept his treasures.

Jinshan Hot Spring Holiday Resort in Enping

Situated in Naji Town in Enping City, this resort has picturesque landscape, fresh air and rich geothermal resources. Also it is filled with folk culture. With attractive natural scenes, it has become a new tourist destination in south China. The holiday resort has natural hot springs as its core. The spring water has a temperature of over 80°C throughout the year. It boasts more than 300 open air springs with a total water flow of 2,000 cubic meters a day, famous as the second spring under heaven.

Zhanjiang

Zhanjiang, or Guangzhou Bay in the old days, is situated in the southern tip of the mainland of China. It is a beautiful sea port city famous for its subtropical landscape. There is not bitter cold in winter and not extremely hot in summer and it is green all year round. The unique tropical plants, mysterious volcanic lake, the continuous coast line and islands constitute many seashore tourist and holiday resorts. In addition, Zhanjiang is a famous seafood production base in Guangdong and its folk art and folk festivals are unique too.

East China Sea Island

Standing in the southeastern part of Zhanjiang, this island covers an area of 286 square kilometers and is the fifth largest island of China. East China Sea Island Beach extends for 28 kilometers long and claims as China’s first long beach. This beach has white fine sand and is soft and comfortable. This island is famous as a place to enjoy sunrise. The sun rises from the sea surface and the scene is brilliant and magnificent. Longshui Mountain has a wonderful landscape and has many fascinating stories. The Man Dragon Dance is a special folk art of the island and is bold and unconstrained, joyous and is welcomed by people.

Huguangyan Tourist and Scenic Area

This area is located in the southwestern part of Zhanjiang City. It is a tourist destination with beautiful landscape and attractive scenes on Leizhou Peninsular. Also it is a famous crater tourist area in the country. Huguangyan Lake has a water area of 2.3 square kilometers and is 446 meters deep, of which the deposit is 420 meters and the water is more than 20 meters deep. The main scenic spots include the Mirror Lake, Poem Corridor, Dragon Fish and Immortal Turtle, Lengyan Temple, Baiyi Buddhist Nunnery, Sea-Gazing Guanyin Hall, Volcano Museum and Tomb of General Chen Jitang. Techeng Fishermen Island Holiday Resort

This island is 2.8 nautical miles away from Zhanjiang City and it takes eight minutes to the island by pleasure boat. The island has a beautiful ecological environment and maintains large plots of mangroves and ecological wetlands. The beaches on the island are soft and the sea water is clean. In addition, the island boasts restaurants offering seafood and farmers, dishes, and seashore bars. It is the best place for ecological leisure, sightseeing and holiday in west Guangdong Province.

Jizhao Bay Tourist and Holiday Resort in Wuchuan

This resort is a AAA national tourist and scenic area and is one of the best summer resorts in China. It has bedrock coast and sandy coast. Along its zigzagged coast are beautiful reefs and clean and picturesque beaches.

Han Sandun Tourist Area in Xuwen

Standing on the northern bank of Qiongzhou Straits and facing Haikou across the sea, this tourist area is a seaside one with Sandun Port as its core. The Sandun Port was the starting port of the famous Silk Road on the sea in the Han Dynasty. The tourist area is mainly composed of a bay, a mangrove nature reserve, a wetland lake, the Han cultural site of starting port of the Silk Road on the sea, three small islands and five fishermen’s villages.

Zhaoqing

Zhaoqing, or Duanzhou in ancient times, is a nationwide known historical and cultural city and a birthplace of the culture of the areas south of the Five Ridges. It has a long history and is the hometown of many scholars and celebrities. It is known as the capital of ink slabs in China. Zhaoqing boasts more than 300 historical and cultural sites including the Xinghu Lake Scenic Area famous as the first wonder in the areas south of the Five Ridges, the picturesque Dinghu Mountain known as the living natural museum, Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple, Mei Nunnery, Qingyun Temple, Yuejiang Building, and Yuankui lower.

Xinghu Lake Scenic and Historica Relics Area

Standing on the northern outskirts of Zhaoqing City, it is one of the first group of national key scenic and historical relics areas and is composed of Seven-Star Crags and the two scenic areas of Dinghu Mountain, covering an area of 19.56 square kilometers. The Seven-Star Crags Scenic Area is composed of five lakes, six hillocks, seven crags and eight caves. It is a scenic area famous for its beautiful and clean lakes, magnificent mountains by water and fantastic caves. The Dinghu Mountain Scenic Area includes Dinghu Lake and a dozen peaks such as Sanbao and Fenglai peaks. This scenic area is famous for its green forests, quiet valleys, charming brooks and waterfalls.

Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple

At the juncture of three rivers in Yuecheng Town, Deqing County, this temple, Chen Family’s Ancestral Temple, and Foshan Ancestral Temple are three ancient architecture treasures in south China. It is famous at home and abroad for 心 profound culture of Dragon Mother, ancient architecture culture, geomancy culture and historical culture.

Panlong Valley in Deqing

Standing in the northwestern part of Deqing County, the valley is a primeval and natural ecological tourist area richly endowed by mountains, waters and forests. It has developed such tourist programs as valley drift, plank road sightseeing, waterfall appreciation, oxygen-taking tour in the valley, large natural swimming pools in different levels, China’s largest group of waterwheels, wooden houses holiday resort on the top of the mountain, village with the only ancient weaving looms in the areas south of the Five Ridges, high-altitude cable ear moving and cross-country go-kart.

Zhongshan

Zhongshan is situated in the mid-southern part of the Pearl River Delta. It has favorable geographic position and is famous as a village of fish and rice. Also Zhongshan has beautiful landscape and is a hometown of many celebrities. In addition, it is a famous native place of many overseas Chinese. It boasts such famous scenic areas as Zhongshan Zhan Garden, Memorial Hall and Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen, Lingnan Water Village, Xianmuyuan Hot Spring and Zima Mountain Park.

Memorial Hall and Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen

Standing in Cuiheng Village in Zhongshan City and by the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Highway, it is former residence of Sun Yat-sen, a great democratic revolutionary forerunner. It is one of the key cultural sites under the state protection. The memorial hall was built in 1956 with mountains behind and sea in front. It has comfortable surroundings with green trees and flowers everywhere. Its main scenic spots include Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen, Memorial Hall of Sun Yat-sen, sculptures of Sun Yat-sen listening to the story about Taiping Heavenly Kingdom against Qing government, demonstration zone of Cuiheng residential houses, and Zhongshan tripod cauldron.

Zhan Garden in Zhongshan

Or Zhongshan Mansion, Zhan Garden is the largest private garden in the areas south of the Five Ridges. This garden was built in a style of Suzhou and Hangzhou gardens. It reflects the quintessence of the classic gardens and also the waterside villages. It demonstrates a Lingnan style of being simple but dignified, unrestrained and elegant.

Lingnan Waterside Village

Standing in Minzhong Town, Zhongshan City, this village is close to the Pearl River estuary. It has convenient transport facilities with the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway and Guangzhou-Zhuhai Highway pass by it. This waterside village has horizontal and vertical rivers and the residential houses scatter along the rivers. The village has beautiful landscape and strong waterside flavors. Lingnan Waterside Village is the best preserved scenic area with natural and cultural ecology in the areas south of the Five Ridges.

Heyuan

Heyuan is one of the excellent tourist cities in China and is a landscape garden city in Guangdong Province famous for its simple folk customs, the most splendid ecological surrounding, the most beautiful scenery and the place suitable for leisure and holiday. The city has three AAAA national tourist areas, two of the first group of national industrial and agricultural tourism demonstration sites, one county with tourism as its core in Guangdong Province and one tourist county with hot spring as its core in the province. Heyuan has created a city image of an ancient county of Hakka, Wanlu Heyuan, the capital of hot springs and the native place of dinosaurs and developed tourist products based on landscape leisure, ecological tours, hot spring health fitting, viewing dinosaur, Hakka customs, drifting, tasting healthy food and visiting revolutionary sites.

Ancient County of Hakka

Heyuan has a long history and many cultural sites. It was a place the ancestors of the Hakka people went down south and settled down and was a place the Baiyue Culture and the Central Plains Culture mixed in earliest dates. Also it is one of the birthplaces of Lingnan Culture. It boasts such cultural heritages as Zijin Huachao Opera, Zhongxin Colorful Lantern, Hakka mountain songs, Longchuan acrobatics, and Heping Tea-Picking Opera. In addition, it has many cultural sites including the Yue King Temple, Well of Yue King, Zhengxiang Tower of the Tang Dynasty, Guifeng Tower of the Southern Song Dynasty. Also it boasts some ancient villages of Hakka, ancient architectures, and Hakka scenic spots such as the ancient city of Zhaotuo, Sujiawei Village, and ancient villages of Nanyuan and Heping Linzhai.

Wanlu Heyuan

Heyuan has quality water, air and forests. The Wanlu Lake is the largest man-made lake in south China and is listed as a base for developing the best drinking water in China. Also Heyuan is the only prefectural city without acid rain in Guangdong Province and one of a few cities free of acid rain in the country. It has been listed as one of the five exemplary cities good in protecting ecological environment in the country by the State Department of Environmental Protection. Heyuan has such ecological tourist and scenic areas as the Wanlu Lake, Huoshan Mountain, Guishan Mountain, Jiulian Mountain Primeval Forest and Qifeng Mountain Forest Holiday Resort.

Capital of Hot Springs

Heyuan is rich in hot spring resources and is praised as the capital of hot springs. It has 37上Qt springs verified. At present, some of them have been developed such as the Yulinmen Hot Spring with exotic romance of Bali Island, Longyuan Hot Spring with world spa culture, Relong Hot Spring famous for its ecological environmental art, the simple Tianshang Renjian Hot Spring and the Dongpo Hot Spring. Hot springs in Heyuan have attracted more and more tourists.

Native Place of Dinosaurs

Heyuan is a native place of dinosaurs and leads the world in dinosaur resources, including fossils of the eggs, skeleton and foot prints of dinosaurs, so far they could not be found in other places in the world. Heyuan is the only intergrowth place of dinosaur eggs in the world. It leads the world in the number of the fossils of dinosaur eggs maintained in the Heyuan museum. In 2005, this has been listed into the Guinness World Records and Heyuan has been entitled as the native place of Chinese dinosaurs.

Chaozhou

Chaozhou is a famous historical and cultural city and an excellent tourist city in China. It is a birthplace of Chaozhou Culture and a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. In addition, Chaozhou enjoys good fame as the capital of Chinese porcelain. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, there is a saying that “If you do not visit Chaozhou, your trip to Guangdong is in vain.” Its well-known cultural sites include Guangji Bridge, Kaiyuan Temple, Temple of Scholar Han Yu, Daoyun Building, and Song Kin Site on Bijia Mountain. The natural scenic spots include West Lake, Phoenix Mountain, and Shibi Mountain Scenic Area. In addition, Chaozhou Opera, Chaozhou music, Chaozhou dishes, Chaozhou gongfu, tea, porcelain and wood carvings are also unique.

Temple of Scholar Han Yu

Standing at the foot of Bijia Mountain on the eastern bank of Hanjiang River, Chaozhou, this temple was built in memory of Han Yu. This solemn temple houses the statue of Han Yu in its main hall, which is accompanied by the statues of Zhang Qian and Li Wan. The temple has couplets on its columns and 40 inscribed tablets inserted on walls which record the history of its construction, Han Yu’s merits in construction of the city and poems and articles eulogizing Han Yu. It is said that the oak tree in front of the temple was planted by Han Yu, which has become one of the eight scenes of Chaozhou.

Guangji Bridge

Guangji Bridge, also known as Xiangzi Bridge, is one of the four main ancient bridges in China together with Zhaozhou Bridge, Luoyang Bridge and Lugou (Marco Polo) Bridge. Today, it is one of the key national cultural sites under the state protection. It stands outside the East Gate of ancient city of Chaozhou. Guangji Bridge was first built in 1171 of the Southern Song Dynasty and has a history of more than 800 years. It demonstrates the styles of the beam bridge, arched bridge and floating bridge and is the only one in the history of bridges. On the both ends of the bridge are 24 pairs of pavilions, towers and halls of different shapes. So there is a saying that 24 appearances show 24 kinds of pavilions, towers and halls and this 0.5-kilometer-long bridge is a miniature of a city.

Daoyun Building

Also known as the Big Building, it stands in Nanlian Village, Raoping County, and was first built in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. It is the largest earthen building built by Hakka people ever found in China. In an octagon shape, the building sits in the south and faces the north with a circumference of 328 meters, 11.5 meters high and 1.6 meters thick. It has a floor space of 10,000 square meters. The tiles are of the same color with the building, fixed with bamboo nails instead of iron ones, so far not a single beam or wood has been moth-eaten. The wall base has a two-tier blue brick above the ground and the wall is built by rammed earth, which is so far well preserved.

West Lake of Chaozhou

Situated in the northwestern part of ancient city of Chaozhou, this scenic area is composed of the West Lake Scenic Area and the Hulu Hill. The West Lake has been a famous scenic spot. West Lake Scenic Area boasts stone inscriptions on the peak rocks, pavilions, towers and buildings are of various shapes, flowers blossom year round and stories concerning the historical and cultural sites are rich and varied. Hulu Hill boasts some 130 cliff inscriptions and is one of the three famous cliff inscriptions in Guangdong Province. The West Lake has clean and nice water and has wonderful surroundings. The fishermen are catching fish with their fishing nets, constituting a poetic scene which is one of the eight scenes of the city.

Climate

Guangdong has a tropical and subtropical monsoon climate. Next to Hainan Province, it has the longest summer season in China and is the richest province in thermal resources. Also it is the province which suffers most frequently from the typhoon, with much precipitation. Most parts of the province have spring, summer and autumn a year with the summer extending for seven months long. The winter in some parts is only one and a half months. In general, Guangdong has a warm climate and the weather is not severely cold in winter. So the province is suitable for tours year round.
