Brief Introduction

Guizhou, “Qian” for short, is located in Southwest China. It is beautiful, quaint, and picturesque. As one of the regions that boast the world’s most typically developed karst landform, it is known as “the National Park Province.”

The province enjoys a very pleasant climate. It has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and a hot rainy season. Summer in Guizhou is cool and humid, and it is also the best season for travel.

Guizhou’s unique and colorful ethnic customs have become one of its gems. There are numberous echnic festivals like the Miao people’s “Sister Festival” and the “Lusheng Festival,” the Dong people’s “Song and Wine Festival” and so on. Ethnic opera is the essence of ethnic customs while ground opera and Nuo opera are honored as “the living fossils of ancient operas.”

The ethnic buildings there are distinctive, particularly the Bell Tower of Dong People, Wind and Rain Bridge , stone houses of Bouyei people and the stilted buildings of the Miao people.

Administration Divisions

Guizhou Province comprises 6 prefecture-level cities and 3 ethnic autonomous prefectures, including Guiyang,Liupanshui, Zunyi, Anshun, Bijie, and Tongren and Qiandongnan, Qiannan, an Qianxinan.

Guiyang

Guiyang’s name comes from the fact that it is located to the south of the Guishan Mountain . It has a history of more than 400 years. Due to the good ecological environment here, it is considered as China’s first national forest city.

Jiaxiu Pavilion

A symbol of Guiyang, Jiaxiu Pavilion was built during Emperor Wan Ii’ s reign in the Ming Dynasty. It is a three-storey attic with an extremely charming night scene. The name “Jiaxiu” means “excellent imperial examinations.” The pavilion collection includes stone carvings, wooden articles, paintings and calligraphy.

Qianling Mountain

The Qianling Mountain is called “the first mountain in southern Guizhou.” It is known throughout China for its tranquil mountains , dense forest’s, and clear lake water. The mountain boasts attractions such as the Sanling Bay Macaque Garden, Hongfu Temple , and the Wind and Rain Bridge as well as the winding mountain footpath.

Red Maple Lake

Red Maple Lake is the plateau karst lake that boasts the most is lands, totalling 100 in number. The lake is surrounded by red maples. In golden autumn, firey orange and red maple leaves create a beautiful landscape.

Huaxi Park

Huaxi Park is known as a “Plateau Pearl.” In it, water runs around the mountain. There are eight scenic areas including the 10-Ii bench la nd , Tianhe ‘Pool, Gaopo ethnic customs and natural scenery and so on.

Anshun

Anshun has been one of Guizhou’s most important political, economic and cultural centers since ancient times , and is known as the “China ‘s Waterfall Village,” the “Tunbao culture village,”  “batik billage,”  and the “elegant western region”.

Getu River

The Getu River Natural Karst Park is a rare treasure. In this scenic area, there is the world’s most beautiful karst landform and ” blind valley,” the world’s tallest ancient riverway, as well as ancient hanging coffins and cave burials.

Tianlong Tunbao

At the beginning, Tianlong Tunbao was a courier station on the ancient post road in the Song and Yuan dynasties and now it is a relatively intact tunbao original village. To this day, its traditional ground  opera is still popular. In addition, it has residential buildings with military defenses.

Jiuzhou Ancient Town

Jiuzhou Ancient Town is the birthplace of the culture of central Guizhou. It is surrounded by water on three sides and faces mountains on the fourth. Most of the streets and buildings in the ancient town were constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The streets were arranged according to principles of Yin-Yang and Wu Xing (Five Chinese Elements) . The ancient wall is shaped like a gourd and is unique in China.

Zuiyi

Zunyi City is located in Northern Guizhou Province. It is near the Dalou Mountains in the north and faces the Wujiang River to the south. In ancient times, it was the town of Liangzhou, a vital passage to Sichuan from Guizhou and an important town in Northern Guizhou. The Site of the Zunyi Conference is located in the Old Town of the city.

The Site of the Zunyi Conference was originally an official residence of Bai Huizhang,  a division commander of Guizhou’s troops, Grand and splendid, it beacme very famous for the Zunyi Conference. Now it original appearance in the conference period is being restored. There are houses and offices of Mao Zedong, Liu Bocheng and others here.

Tucheng Ancient Town

Tucheng Ancient Town is famous for its salt transport, with salt shops, salt warehouse, and a stage and art gallery from 200 years ago preserved to this day. Around Tucheng , there are four major military fortresses such as Jiulongtun.

Xishui

Xishui has long been praised as the “model eco-system and summer resort,” and consists mostly of Danxia landforms. This region contains the green eco-tourist zones like China Danxia Valley,  Chinese Firs, a swan pool, and Flying Doves.

Chishui

Chishui got its name because the beautiful and mysterious Chishui River runs through the whole territory, With beautiful mountains, rivers and scenery, it is known as the “City of 1,000 Waterfalls,” “Danxia Crown,” “Hometown of Bamboo,” and “Kingdom of Cyathea Spinulosa.”

10-zhang Cave

Chishui Great Waterfall is characterized by waterfall clusters, seas of bamboo, and Danxia landforms. The 10-Zhang Great Cave Waterfall, Middle Cave Waterfall, 20 acres Camelias and other attractions can all be found here.

Sidong Ravine

The main scenery in the Sidong Rivine scenic area consists of four cascade waterfalls distributed over the four-kilometer river course. On both sides of the ravine, there are 20 mountain creeks, forming a huge waterfall cluster.

Bing'an Ancient Town

Bing’an Ancient Town, built on the steep perilous boulder near the Chishui River against green mountains, is surrounded by water on three sides. Its gate and walls are made of stone. Although the stilted wooden buildings built along the mountain are 100 years old, they are still as solid as a rock.

Miao and Dong Villages

Leishan - Xijiang Miao Village

Xijiang is the largest Miao village in the country. It is a place where the lifestyle of the Miao people is preserved comparatively intact, and is, thus, often known as “a natural museum.” Its beautiful stilted buildings are especially unique in China.

Liping - Diping Wind and Rain Bridge

The Diping Wind and Rain Bridge is known as the Flower Bridge. It straddles across the Nanjiang River. In the river stand bluestone piers supporting the bridge of a wooden beam structure. On the lower level, there are two rows of eight thick fir trunks connected with tenons, bridging the two sides. It is a wonderful Dong ethnic group building.

Southeast Guizhou - Zhenyuan Ancient Town

Zhenyuan Ancient Town is one or the four most intact ancient towns in Guizhou Province, surrounded by mountains. An S-shaped river flows through it. On the north bank is the old town , and on the south bank is the old acropolis. It looks like the Ying-Yang symbol from afar.

Xingyi - The Forest of Ten Thousand Peaks

The Forest of Ten Thousand Peaks consists of nearly 20,000 strange green peaks. The whole shape of the peak forest is perfect. Its five shapes of peaks are visible at the Array Peak Forest, Sword Peak Forest, Dragon Peak Forest, Arhat Peak Forest, and Stacked Caps Peak Forest. Attractions include General Peak, Stars Surrounding the Moon and so on.

Xingyi - Maling River Grand Canyon

Maling River Canyon is famous for ground cracks, narrow gorges, marvellous waterfalls, and wall-mounted calcium carbonate. In the canyon, the waterfalls flow rapidly, cone-shaped peaks cluster together, and karst caves connect with each other. Ancient temples, bridges, battlefields, and post roads are hidden in the hill forest.

Kaiyang - South River Grand Canyon

The South River Grand Canyon is known as “Shangri-La in Guizhou,” and includes waterfalls, caves, and steep rocks. Magnificent and peculiar mountains stand on both sides. Cliffs are densely covered with stalactites. It has a typical stone forest landscape.

Karst Caves

Anshun - Dragon Palace

The Dragon Palace is amazing because of its underground rivers and karst caves. There are four major scenic areas including the central scenic area, Xuan Pool, Rapeseed Lake, and Immortal Mountain Valley. The central scenic area is dotted with more than 90 karst caves. China’s longest and most beautiful water karst caves can be found here, along with China’s largest cave temple “Kuanyin Cave,” and China’s largest cave waterfall “Dragon Gate Waterfall.”

Bijie - Zhijin Cave

Zhijin Cave is divided into 11 grand lobbies and 47 halls. In the cave, a variety of stalactites, and stone curtains hang in different peculiar shapes. Sights such as the magnificent “underground pagoda forest,” the proud, straight “snow-covered pine trees,” the illusory “Iron Mountain in cloud and mist,” and the “silent mountains” that stretch into the horizon can all be found here.

Huangguoshu Waterfall

The Huangguoshu Scenic Area is centered in the Huangguoshu Grand Waterfall. The Stone Village, Holy Dragon Cave, Steep Slope Pond, and Tianxing Bridge scenic area are located here from north to south.

Huangguoshu Grand Waterfall

Huangguoshu Grand Waterfall, 74 meters high and 81 meters wide , is China’s largest waterfall, with Huangguoshu Waterfall, a typical karst erosion-split waterfall, at its center. On the 20-kilometer upstream and downstream river course, there are 18 grand, peculiar, perilous, and wonderful waterfalls of different styles. 

The Water Curtain Cave, one of the wonders of Huangguoshu Waterfall, is located on the waterfall at a height of 40 to 47 meters . It is 134 meters long , consisting of six water curtains, five cave halls, three ca e springs , and six passages. In the Water Curtain Cave, the sound of the waterfall becomes thundering and thrilling. A bead curtain hangs down from the waterfall and can be easily reached.

Tianxing Bridge

The Tianxing Bridge Scenic Area mainly includes the Tianxing Cave, Tianxing Basin, Water Stone Forest and other attractions. Tianxing Cave is colorful and diverse in shapes, with many huge cave halls and numerous karst caves.

Steep Slope Pond Waterfall

The top of the Steep Slope Pond Waterfall is 105 meters wide and 21 meters high, making it the widest among the Huangguoshu waterfall cluster. Before flooding occurs, the waterfall gives out a rumbling roar, so it is also called the “Roaring Waterfall.”

Fanjing Mountain

The main peak of the Fanjing Mountain is 2.494 meters above sea level. The original ecology has been preserved intact. The “mushroom stone” on the main peak offers a gorgeous landscape. The Fanjing Mountain is also a famous Buddhist mountain. According to legend, it is a bodhimanda for Maitreya.

10,000-page Book Precipice

The whole mountain of 10,000-page Book Precipice is made up of layers of well­-piled shale. This magnificent structure is one of the six wonders of the Fanjing Mountain.

Jindao Gorge

There are three flying bridges built in Jindao Gorge, one of which is called the “Immortal Bridge” built in the Ming Dynasty. It is an arch bridge made of huge stones transported from 50 kilometers away.

Huguo Temple

Huguo Temple was formerly called Tianchi Academy, the most spectacular ancient temple on the Fanjing Mountain, and one of the four famous imperial temples of the Ming Dynasty. The entire temple complex is a wooden structure with beautiful buildings, carved beams and painted rafters.

Zhangjiang River, Libo

Libo Zhangjiang River Scenic Area is preeminent for its primitiveness, quaintness, mystery, and colorfulness. It includes four major scenic areas, namely, the Shuichunhe Canyon scenic area the Zhang River Bucolic scenic area, the Big Seven Archways scenic area, and the Small Seven Archways scenic area.

Big Seven Archways

Big Seven Archways has its name from the seven massive ancient archway bridges located there. This ares contains primitive forests, canyons,  underground  streams,  and underground  lakes,  which are perilous, beautiful, mysterious, and magnificent. The secluded canyon and caves are really wonderful.

Small Seven Archways

Small Seven Archways is named after the seven small archway bridges. In the narrow valley, there are secluded caves, flowing waterfalls, and rugged strange rocks which are well known for being delicate, beautiful, quaint, and quiet.

Shuichun River Canyon

Shuichun River is the most beautiful section of the Zhangjiang River. It got its name from the Bouyei people’s Shuichun Village. Perilous hills, steep cliffs, torrential shoals.. an dense jungle characterize this area.

A Tour of Ethnic Villages

Route: Kaili – Rongjiang – Congjiang – Zhaoxing – Liping

Sight: This route passes through Miao and Dong villages, including Xijiang Miao Village, Langde Miao Village, Basha Miao Village, Wudong Miao Village, Yangfang Miao Village, Zhaoxing Dong Village, Liping Dong Village, Dali Dong Village, Zaidang Dong Village and so on.

A Tour of Odd Mountains and Strange Rivers

Route: Tongren – Libo – Anshun

Sight: This route passes through mountains and rivers, including the wonders of the Fanjing Mountain, Maolan Jiudongtian. the Zhangjiang River, Huangguoshu Waterfall and other sites where tourists can experience the magical power of nature.

A Tour of Southeast Guizhou

Route: Guiyang – Libo – Kaili – Zhenyuan – Anshun

Sight: This route covers some scenic spots in Southeast Guizhou. There is the Qianling Mountain , Zhijin Cave, Small and Big Se,·en Archways, Xijiang Miao Village, Langde Miao Village, Zhenyuan Ancient Town, Qingyan Ancient Town, Huangguoshu Waterfall and so on. Dining

Guizhou people love to eat spicy and sour food. Sour soup hot pot and bacon, are specialties of Guizhou. Famous dishes include spicy chicken, beef tendon with pickled peppers, Huajiang barbecued pork with fish in sour soup, and Zhuangyuan trotter. In Guiyang, there are also many famous snacks such as Siwawa, meat or fowl in sauce, stir-fried crawfish, shredded conch meat, river crab, eight-treasure rice pudding, rice dumplings , dried fried tofu and so on.

Shopping

Special local products include Maotai, roxburgh rose, batik , Miao silverware, Anshun San Dao, Dafang lacquer, Libo summer sleeping mats, Duyun Maojian tea, beef jerky, peppers, log a rt, medical herbs, and ox horn products.

Batik: Guizhou is the hometown of batik. In addition to exquisite patterns on batik cloth, wax will produce cracks on the cloth after cooling. Pigment penetrates into the cracks, and various colorful patterns are produced, commonly known as “ice patterns”, which are very beautiful.

By Air

Guizhou’s airports include the Longdongbao International Airport, Tongren Daxing Airport, Liping Airport, and Anshun Huangguoshu Airport. Among them, the Guiyang Longdongbao Airport is the main airport with 81 routes, including 60 domestic routes, two regional routes and four international routes.

By Train

The railways of Guizhou have Guiyang on the hub, mainly including the Guiyang­ Kunming Railway and the Nanning­ Kunming Railway, which connect the Yangtze River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei economic circle in the east, Yunnan and Southeast Asia in the west, the Pearl River Delta economic circle and Gulf of Tonkin in the south, and Sichuan, Chongqing and Northwest China in the north.

By Road

In Guizhou, a highway network centered all the cities and counties of Guizhou. The four national expressways, namely, the Changsha­ Guiyang Expressway, Guiyang-Liuzhou Expressway, Kunming-Guiyang Expressway, and Chengdu-Guiyang Expressway as well as the three highways, namely, the Guiyang­ Anshun-Huangguoshu Highway, Guiyang­ Zunyi Highway (Guizun), and Guiyang-Bijie Highway (Guibi) extend to all regions, cities, and prefectures in the province.
