Tourism for Poverty Alleviation

Welcome Message

Better Tourism, Better Life, Better World

Welcome Message

This time we’d like to offer you something different: tourism, one of the most powerful industries, exerts its energy not only by inspiring travelers to find more meaning in life, but also helps dramatically change the life of the poor and vulnerable living in the visited places. Thus comes our collection themed on TOURISM FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY-ALLEVIATION.

The World Tourism Alliance (WTA), has been joining hands with the World Bank and the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC), in collecting and highlighting the best practice of using tourism to eradicate poverty. Here you could access 3 annual releases of WTA BEST PRACTICE IN POVERTY ALLEVIATION THROUGH TOURISM (2018-2020), of which 90% practices are contributed by China.

In 2019, WTA and the China Global Television Network (CGTN) together launched a series of mini-documentaries based on the releases. These mini-docs focused on the most remote rural areas in China and recorded how tourism played its magic and greatly improved the local livelihood and transformed the regions. All are available in this section on our website.

In addition, 140 selected pictures feature poverty-reduction through tourism in China are on display. You could see the bitter and sweet, the past and present, the ups and downs throughout the journey that has been made, which changed both the life of people and the ground where they live.

China National Tourist Office, Sydney (CNTO) works with WTA and puts up the offering of China’s most successful practice in poverty-alleviation for reference. We welcome friends from Australia and the south-pacific islands to visit China, especially those featured places, and see the truly amazing Chinese rurality with your own eyes.
